Hi everyone,

I'm working on a project around LJ and privacy. I would absolutely love it if you could fill this out, and even possibly encourage your friends to fill this out (this post is unlocked). The more answers I get, the more accurate the results will be.

(In the interest of full disclosure, this is not for my academic work: it is for my consulting job. The information you provide will be used to generate recommendations to inform product design. Your username will never be used or attached to any information you provide in any way. Please email me if you have questions or concerns.)

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate it!

I use filters for work-related posts.

I ran out of space, so the "Other" for 4 is "whoever I feel like complaining about at the moment".

Also, when answering, I assumed you were talking only about filters used for posting, not ones that are used just for reading.

Same problem. The text boxes don't allow enough space to voice things. Interesting poll though. I do hope you publish it!

I love your username. There are beautiful paulownias all over the Philadelphia area (where I used to live), and I miss their blossoms and their gorgeous shape.

Aww thanks. I actually have not seen paulownias in person, but picked the tree because of its association with the phoenix in legend, and women. I have a fondness for Asian stories and lore... :)

I wish I could have given more space, but LJ has a 255 character limit on text boxes in polls for some inane reason.

It's okay :). I was thinking about leaving you a massive comment on using f-lists to post about work, but I ran out of space.

We're all aware of how companies and schools look to these comms for evidence. wooo.

I'd prefer to give my "other" answers here.

3. Anything relating to work automatically (well, by me) gets locked. There's too many things that can go wrong and while I never mention my company or my co-worker's names, it's just safer to keep anything about work from public view and from search engines.

4. The main use that I have for custom friends groups is as an opt-in filter. I talk about some things that people are uncomfortable with and I want someone to specifically ask to be in on it rather than them coming on it unawares.

Most of the reasons in Question 4 make me make an entry Friends-Only, but not usually to use a filter. (However, I only checked the ones that do make me use filters.)

I have a girls only filter, which is not on your list #4. (it includes most, but not all of the girls on my friends list, and no boys, and I use it mostly to complain about cramps and visits to the obgyn and occasionally how boys suck.)

Also, on the subject of the usability of the edit custom friends groups, there are many times it would be useful for me to be able to filter to the opposite of a filter I already have set up (local vs not local, for example.)

#8 -- fix the LiveJournal image feeds problem. The site automatically distributes your images to a variety of feeds. It's possible to opt-out, but complicated.
