Srsly, this is really pissing me off.

jesus, I'd be so annoyed if my friends page was full of video embeds and Firefox crashed as a result.

It looks like they're looking into it.

Who knows how long it'll actually take, though...

I agree with Herbaliser, my LJ will turn out too much like my Myspace page.

Yeah, except they don't play automatically! You have to click on them first.

That's true. I guess I just get annoyed sometimes when people don't resize or LJ cut their photos when they post and it screws up your LJ page for the day.

Because if you could embed that stuff, you could embed anything that could be seriously annoying and/or browser-crashing. They'd have to have some kind of whitelist, which would then of course be a pain to administer. If you let in YouTube and Google, then people will be like "Why doesn't Odeo and Veoh work too?" It's not really a technical problem, more of an administrative one.

Knowing LJ though, they'll make it into a technical problem and only host videos that you post to LJ (or scrapbook) itself.

To embed youtube and google video, you'd have to allow the placement of flash on the page, which is a serious serious security rick. Allowing flash movies on your page will let you do all sorts of things to the server they are on. I'm not sure why they haven't worked out a youtube.com-specific security exception though. That seems like it'd be pretty safe. ish.

It's coming. In fact you can do it now with YouTube only.
"LJ is in the process of helping make it easy for users to post videos from YouTube and photos from Photobucket, which is an idea that started on Vox. We'll roll out those features in the coming weeks."

http://news.livejournal.com/92448.html

Photobucket and YouTube embeds are part of www.vox.com
If anyone wants to try it out (by invite only right now), email me and I'll send you one.

hrm.. have you seen veoh? I played with it yesterday and it was rock solid, all around. Being anti-youtube, I am hopeful this catches on. Also, are you guys at all interested in getting the brightcove player to work? I feel good things coming from them.

They're great for posting videos in blogs, but they are wasting the world's first awesome aggregation of video content:

1) it doesn't integrate with ANYTHING.
2) I can't see it on my TV
3) I can't even watch it fullscreen on my computer, or, say, save a playlist of 100 awesome youtube videos and have them play randomly like a tv station
4) I can't download the movies easily. I can download them, mind you, and convert them to .mp4, and put them into itunes and watch them on my tv, but I can't do it easily. I have to use four utilities. And why? because they are pretending, to the copyright holders, that they're just a stream, when they're not. It's a convenient lie for them, to keep the copyright holders off their back, but it's a lie nonetheless, and one that makes me jump through a bunch of hoops that shouldn't exist.
5) There's no means of monetization. If I am a video auteur, and I want to sell my awesome movies, and people want to buy them, youtube is still useless, whereas brightcove is not.
6) They censor for "obejctionable" content. I much prefer LJ's approach to such things.
